PASS History - MARKED HIDDEN

The Paris Alternative Learning Center opened its doors on August 12, 1996 and was located at 138 Lamar Avenue. The building housing the program was rented from the Police Athletic League and consisted of one large classroom, two smaller classrooms, and an office. Additionally we utilized the PAL gymnasium for physical education classes.

The staff consisted of one teacher/director, an additional certified teacher and two teacher assistants. Within a short period of time, an additional teacher was added to the staff enabling the director to handle discipline, administrative duties, transferring of students into and out of the program and time to work one-on-one with students employing behavior modification and discipline intervention techniques. The program began with nineteen high school students and seven middle school students and at full capacity housed forty-eight students. Joan Moore, certified in education with an inner city minor, designed the disciplinary program that was implemented with the goal to provide an opportunity for all students to achieve success in education.

In the summer of 1999, the PAL program became the PASS program, Paris Alternative School for Success and relocated to the old East Paris Baptist Church at 1513 Lamar Avenue. After renovations were completed, PASS opened its doors on August 11, 1999 and housed the DAEP (Discipline Alternative Education Program) for elementary through high school students whose placement is due to persistent misbehavior or Title V felonies. We also began the ACE (Accelerated Credit Education) program for students who were unable to graduate with their class due to being behind in credits.

We now have seventeen members on staff and every student in the discipline program receives character education training in conjunction with their academic classes. All students enrolled at the PASS Campus learn Choice Theory, making better choices to enable their lives both in school and in the community to be productive.
