Students will apply comprehension skills as they understand and analyze the structures and elements of a variety of genres and texts.  Vocabulary will be developed by applying their understanding of word parts, using context to determine the meaning of unknown words, finding meaning in analogies, learning foreign words and phrases used in the English language, and accessing resources, such as dictionaries and thesauri, when applicable.  The focus of Word Study is not on the memorization of specific words and definitions, but on building readers with the skill necessary to comprehend unknown words when reading.
